Here are some of the least expensive PAYG and monthly deals we have found for MaxMon-ready Android phones (and SIMs). This information is only intended as a rough guide, as the market changes too fast for us to track. Plan: Top-up with £5 and automatically obtain a reward of 150MB of data, valid for 30 days. This data does not consume your £5 credit (if you don't send texts or make voice calls). After 30 days use the same £5 credit to buy a '500MB' add-on and get another 30 days allowance of 500MB data. This requires you to calendar reminders but you are getting mobile data for £2.50 a month! Alternatively, top-up with £10 every 30 days and buy an 'All in One 10' add-on to get 500MB data, 3000 texts and 100 minutes UK calls.

Plan: EE have a fresh take on PAYG. Add top up credit to an EE PAYG phone and then opt into a £1 data pack. This last 7 days and gives you 100MB, 10 minutes UK calls and 10 texts. £1 will automatically be deducted from your credit every 7 days, so a year equates to an annual cost of £52 (or £4.33 a month). There are also apparently free bonus allowances for routinely topping up.

Plan: £14.99/month for unlimited texts, 500MB data, 500 UK voice minutes. 24-month contract. If you are already on EE, or have multiple devices, it may be worth looking at EE's new Shared Plans.

Plan: Every 90 days top-up with £10, after opting in to a 'Freebee Data'. The Freebee will give you 30 days allowance of 500MB data (which does not consume your £10 credit). After the initial 30 days use your untouched £10 credit to buy a 'data extra' which will give you 500MB of data over 30 days. The 'data extras' will automatically be renewed from your remaining £5 credit. Calendar a reminder for 90 days time to repeat this rigmarole :) Disable MaxMon app text (SMS) reports/alerts as text messages will gobble up your credit at 14p per text.

Giffgaff is an interesting alternative for MaxMon users. GiffGaff now sells phones as well as SIMs, which work in O2 or unlocked phones (on the O2 network). So you can buy a cheap PAYG O2 phone and swap in a giffgaff SIM, or unlock an Android smartphone from any other network (giffgaff provide lots of help re unlocking) and do the same. It's worth considering it, because giffgaff offers 500MB data-only 'gigabag' bundles for £5/month!

MobiData is an interesting alternative for MaxMon users. MobiData only sells data SIMs (no phones, no calls or texts) which work in unlocked phones (on the Three network). So you can buy a cheap unlocked Android phone and swap in a MobiData SIM, or unlock an Android smartphone from any other network (see the giffgaff site for help re unlocking) and do the same. It's worth considering it, because MobiData offers 1GB data-only plans for £4.94/month!
